When you first bring your new puppy home, you will want to start puppy training straight away, so that he gets into the habit and routine of doing the things you want him to do.
Let go through so of the things that you might consider first
- Getting the puppy to sleep through the night
- What puppy toys to get
- Why a soft crate?
- Toilet Training Your Border Collie Puppy
- Socialize Your Border Collie Puppy
Getting the puppy to sleep through the night
So when your new border collie puppy come home with you for the first time, don't forget that everything will be new to him and he may be worried as he won't have his siblings nearby for bed time.
So it's your job to take the place of his sleep buddies so that he can relax at night and so you can get a good night's sleep too. Make sure that he is not hungry or thirsty and that he has had his last toilet break before bed.
Put his bed near where you are sleeping, at least for the first few nights, so that he knows you are close and he can smell you being close by. This will comfort him so that he sleeps through the night.
Consider what puppy toys to get
Before you think about some toys for your pup, remember that these items help in the learning and development process, so you will need to pick out the puppy toys that fit in with the size of your pup and get ones he can chew up.
The mix of toys ranges from some chew toys. You can put some food into them. My favorite ones are kongs. You can fill the middle up with some of your pups favorite treats and he will have lots of fun getting all the bits outs. Then you can refill it and start again (have a few ready to go)
Why a soft crate and a bed are important items
Buying your border collie his own bed and soft crate is very important, he needs to have a safe place that he knows he can have a sleep. They are also fantastic training tools so that you can teach your pup to go to his crate when you are busy in the house or if a visitor comes calling.
Having over one bed or crate is a good tip, have one in each room, this helps your puppy know he has a spot in each area of the house and best of all you don't have to keep carrying his bed around from room to room, it sounds simple but this was a game changing move for me and my pup.
How to start a toilet training routine
Very young border collie puppies spent most of their time sleeping, and when they wake up, they were usually hungry or thirsty.
The easiest thing to do is to take the puppy out for a toilet break every hour, take him to the same spot in the garden and just wait for him to go, then bring him back in and play some games with him.
They usually will play for five to ten minutes, then they will want to have another sleep. This will make your puppy comfortable and help to establish a routine for him.
How to get the puppy to socialize
To have a happy and well-adjusted border collie it is very important to have him socialize with many people as possible, one on the easiest ways to do this is during his daily walks, go to places where you know other people will be and when they take an interest in your pup always stop and let them give him a pat or a treat, (take some treats with you and give it to the person to feed to your pup)
Some good place to go will be at the local park or at the beach if you have one nearby, places where people are relaxed and not in s hurry, give your puppy a mix of different people such as men, women children, just go for a mix of many people.
This will make your puppy to feel happy around people and not get timid when he finds himself surrounded suddenly.
